Breaking News: Peloton Treadmill Child Death Leads to Tread+ Recall

Mid-March 2021, Peloton CEO John Foley announced that a child had tragically died as a result of his company’s Tread+ treadmill — but took no action to recall the product or prevent future injuries.

In light of multiple reports of children being pulled beneath and pinned under the Tread+, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urgently warned consumers to stop using the Peloton Tread+ in April of 2021 — but the fitness company ignored the CPSC’s warning.

“The CPSC may issue a warning like this when it decides that a product puts people at an unreasonable risk of injury or death, but the manufacturer won’t agree to a recall.”
– William Wallace, Manager of Safety Policy at Consumer Reports

Finally, nearly two months after first acknowledging the risks of its product, Peloton decided to stop selling the Tread+ and called for a full recall of both their Tread and Tread+ treadmills — but for different safety concerns in Peloton’s Tread.

Peloton Tread Recall

On the same day as the Tread+ recall, Peloton voluntarily recalled their original Tread treadmills over different design flaws. This earlier model of treadmill has a touchscreen that can detach and fall, potentially injuring consumers.

Peloton Tread+ Design Risks and Injuries

Certain design features in the Peloton Tread+ machine may make it particularly dangerous to users, even when the treadmill is being used properly, according to a CPSC staff spokesperson.

These dangerous design elements include the treadmill’s belt mechanism and its unique height off the ground, which allows objects, children, and pets to potentially be pulled underneath and pinned.

According to the CPSC, there have been a range of injuries sustained from the Tread+ treadmill so far, including:

  • Abrasions
  • Broken bones or fractures
  • Burns
  • Serious brain injury
  • Death
